Immediate Aftercare: The First 48 Hours

The first two days are critical for a smooth recovery. Follow these expert guidelines to ensure proper healing and minimize discomfort at home.

Bleeding Control

  • Bite firmly on the gauze pad provided for 30–45 minutes.
  • Replace if bleeding continues after the first hour.
  • Keep your head elevated on pillows when resting.

Swelling & Comfort

  • Apply an ice pack to your cheek for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.
  • Swelling usually peaks around day 2 or 3.
  • Rest as much as possible for the first 24 hours.

What to Avoid

  • Do NOT spit or use straws, as this can cause dry socket.
  • Avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting.
  • Do not touch the surgical area with your tongue or fingers.

Pain Management & Aftercare

Managing discomfort effectively is a priority for a smooth recovery. We recommend beginning your prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief strictly as directed, ideally before the local anaesthetic wears off. For most patients, a combination of paracetamol and ibuprofen provides a safe and reliable solution to manage post-surgical sensations during the first few days.

  • Don't use commercial mouthwashes unless specifically directed by us.
  • Don't use an electric toothbrush near the extraction sites for at least one week.

Signs to Watch For

While complications are rare, your safety is our priority. Please contact us immediately if you experience any of the following warning signs:

  • Severe pain that does not respond to prescribed medication
  • Persistent bleeding that cannot be controlled with firm gauze pressure
  • New or worsening swelling several days after the procedure
  • High fever or persistent chills
  • A foul taste or odor that doesn't go away after rinsing
  • Numbness or tingling in your lip, chin, or tongue that lasts over 24 hours

Long-term Recovery Tips

While the initial healing phase is quick, your gums and bone will continue to remodel over several months. Following these simple tips ensures your long-term comfort and health.

  • Gradual Activity: Slowly reintroduce exercise after the first week.
  • Monitor Healing: Gums fill in over several weeks as bone density returns.
  • Routine Check-ups: Maintain regular cleanings with your local Wagga dentist.
  • Stay Patient: It takes time for extraction sites to fully heal beneath the gumline.
